Kick-Off + Live Art Performance

Saturday, April 21 — 10:30am

Official #IceBoxChallengeNYC Event

Our Challenge begins today! We are excited to launch with NYC’s Earth Day Festivities. The boxes are located in the heart of NYC DOT’s Car-Free Day, where we will host opening remarks and a live art performance. Olivier Binamé, a well-known Brussels-based street artist, will be showcasing his craft by painting the final touches of his design on the boxes. His colorful murals and sculptures have been featured all over the world, including on Godiva Chocolate’s 90th Anniversary packaging. Learn more about his artistry here.

There will be opening remarks by NYC Department of Transportation, NYC Mayor’s Office of Sustainability, Garment District Alliance, Building Energy Exchange, New York Passive House, and Brussels Invest and Export / hub.brussels. Come join us as we celebrate Earth Day and press the buzzer to start the NYC Challenge. We’ll unveil the boxes to measure the remaining ice during the Brussels Days on May 23.

Celebrate NYC: Building a Sustainable City (Exhibit)
Opens Tuesday, April 24  —  Mon to Fri; 9:30am to 5:00pm

The Building Energy Exchange presents Celebrate NYC, an exhibit celebrating the leadership of the New York City real estate community in advancing building energy efficiency and effective climate action. Celebrate NYC will showcase 60 energy efficiency retrofit projects. These projects represent all kinds of buildings across New York City’s boroughs, and feature a wide variety of energy upgrades.

North American Passive House Network (NAPHN) – Certified Passive House Training
Monday, May 14 — May 18 – 9:00am to 5:00pm

NAPHN’s Certified Passive House Designer/Consultant course is the premier training program for Passive House building professionals. This course is specifically designed to teach the international Passive House Standard to American professionals making Passive House buildings in the U.S. construction industry. With 5 days of in-class instruction, and additional e-learning modules that can be completed at one’s own pace, participants will get a thorough grounding in the critical aspects of Passive House design and construction  This course is for all building professionals: architects, MEP and structural engineers, builders and construction managers working in the design and construction of new build and retrofit Passive House buildings. AIA accredited for 35 LUs.

Multifamily Passive House in NYC – by Steven Winter Associates, Inc. 
Tuesday, May 15 —  6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Join us for an exciting evening of Passive House and sustainable building trivia at the site of the NYC Ice Box Challenge! Moderated by the Passive House experts from Steven Winter Associates, attendees can test their knowledge of the Passive House standard for a chance to earn prizes.

Following trivia, the event will migrate to the neighboring offices of Dattner Architects, where presentations will be given on the state of Passive House as it relates to multifamily buildings in New York City. Refreshments will be served.

Brussels Days
May 21 – 24, 2018

The Ice Box Challenge is a part of Brussels Days, an annual series of events and activities that will take place in order to promote the Brussels-Capital Region. Taking place in a different city every year, New York has been chosen to host the 13th edition of the Brussels Days. The goal is to promote a wide range of aspects in the Brussels-Capital Region: its touristic location, history, economy, and relationships with the world. This year, Brussels Days will highlight the following sectors: architecture, fashion, and technology.

A Brussels delegation led by the Minister-President, Mr. Rudi Vervoort, the Secretary of State in charge of Foreign Trade, Mrs. Cécile Jodogne, and the Minister of Promotion of Brussels of the Federation Wallonia-Brussels, Mr. Rachid Madrane. They will visit New York to foster the economic, commercial, political and cultural ties.

Reveal the Ice!

Today, the Ice Boxes will be revealed during the press conference. Our speakers include the Minister-President of the Brussels-Capital Region, Mr. Rudi Vervoort; the Secretary of State in charge of Foreign Trade of the Brussels-Capital Region, Mrs. Cécile Jodogne; the Minister of Promotion of Brussels of the Federation Wallonia-Brussels, Mr. Rachid Madrane; as well as representatives from NYC Mayor’s Office of Sustainability, Building Energy Exchange, and New York Passive House.
The winners of the prizes will also be announced.

North American Passive House Network (NAPHN) – Emerging Professional Scholarship for NAPHN Certified Passive House Designer Training
Due date Friday, May 25, 2018

Apply for an emerging scholarship, one recipient will be awarded a fully funded registration for one training to be completed within the next 6 months at the location of your choosing. Candidates should have experience in the fields of architecture, construction, or building engineering with a focus on high-performance buildings. As an emerging professional scholarship, priority will be given those in the first 5 years of their career, including recent graduates and those who have made recent career shifts.

New York Passive House (NYPH) Conference & Expo
Friday, June 8 — 8:30am to 6:30pm

As the number of Passive House Certified buildings continues to expand rapidly, it has never been more important for professionals and practitioners working on energy efficiency initiatives, high performance buildings and renewables to become familiar with techniques and materials, not to mention one another. This year’s New York Passive Conference and Expo will take place on June 8th from 8:30am to 6:30pm at the Metropolitan Pavilion (125 West 18th Street).
